Moriones Festival 2008
This is the first time that I have ever seen a Moriones Festival, a very colorful Marinduque festival with a lot of interesting morions to shoot. All the morion soldiers came in full force wielding all kinds of weapons: spears, daggers, whips, axes, and swords.
Historically, the Moriones Festival started in Mogpog, Marinduque in 1807 as a dramatic play to commemorate the passion and crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. Then later on, the tradition spread to other Marinduque towns like Gasan, Boac, and Torrijos.
The Moriones play also centers on the story one of the Roman centurions, named Longinus, a half-blind legionnaire, who according to Christian legend speared the left side of the body of Jesus Christ. The blood then smeared Longinus left blind eye, curing his blindness. Longinus became a follower of Christ, and as his fellow Morions discovered it, they beheaded him. He was later canonized as Saint Longinus.
