Mister Rogers And Me

While on vacation in Nantucket, Massachusetts, MTV News executive Benjamin Wagner had the ultimate neighbor, Mister Fred Rogers owned the house next door....
Mister Rogers.....

The man with the cardigan (all of them were knit by his mother), who welcomed us into his home everyday to teach us simple lessons about life....

The man who created the 'Neighborhood of Make-Believe', and made us desperate with the need to jump on that little trolley that traveled through his living room...
.

The man who taught me how to tie my shoes....

The man who made us all feel welcome in his home, with a simple tune telling us that 'It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood', and asking 'Won't you be my neighbor?'.

(Yeah, I'm not going to go into a huge diatribe about how he pretty much single-handedly saved both public television and the VCR. Or how he meticulously kept his weight at 143, because 143 meant 'I Love You'. Or how he wrote and composed all the songs on the show.)

I'm going to tell you about the new documentary, Mister Rogers & Me. I can't wait to see this! Mister Rogers played such a giant role in my life....

'On the afternoon of their first meeting, “America’s Favorite Neighbor” asked the young journalist about his job as an MTV News producer. Wagner felt exposed and embarrassed, a PBS mind in a jump-cut, sound-bit MTV world.

Mister Rogers said warmly, “I feel so strongly that deep and simple is far more essential than complex.”

Later, Rogers said simply, "Spread the message, Benjamin.”'

After Mister Rogers' death in 2003, Benjamin Wagner traveled across the country to interview friends of Mister Rogers to find out more about the man in the cardigan. In the end, the brothers come to know more than just the man and his luminous legacy. They unmask the forces acting against depth and simplicity, and develop the means to lead deeper, simpler lives.

If you love Mister Rogers as much as I do, you should definitely check out the PBS site for his show.... You can see videos of Mister Rogers singing 'Won't You Be My Neighbor' and 'You Can Never Go Down The Drain'! It sounds simple, but nobody else ever took the time out to tell me that I was 'bigger than any bathroom drain', and that I wouldn't be sucked into a world where Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fight to keep our city safe.... Oh, and you can see the video of Mister Rogers and the crayon factory!

Taking On Tyson

Approximately one month ago, fellow blogger TS Hendrik at The Non-Review wrote his opinions on the poor state of American television....

I say nay good sir! And I only need one piece of evidence to win my case..... I present to the ladies and gentlemen of the jury:

"Animal Planet presents 'Taking On Tyson'"

Mike Tyson will take you inside the ropes of his favorite sport and first love.... No, not boxing.... Former Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson will take you inside the intensely competitive and bizarrely fascinating world of pigeon racing. Tyson will compete against other pigeon handlers in an attempt to be crowned a champ once again.

It all comes full circle.... In the self-titled Tyson documentary, Iron Mike explains that attacking a gang member that murdered one of Mike's prized pigeons indirectly started his path into boxing (something that would allow him to take out his rage). And his boxing career has created Iron Mike Tyson, the celebrity image needed to convince Animal Planet that he should host a show about pigeon racing. Oh, another odd note, did you know that All Star NBA player Carmelo Anthony is credited as a producer of the Tyson documentary?

I don't know about you, but I'm going to be glued to my set every time this show is on the television! And the 'Taking on Tyson' video game is going to be awesome!

A New King Of Kong

In 2007, Picturehouse released a fascinating documentary titled 'The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters'. The documentary followed Steve Weibe in his attempt to dethrone Billy Mitchell (super douche canoe) as the 'King Of Donkey Kong'. Sitting uncomfortably hunched over for hours in front of the boxy arcade machines, controversy brews as the two competitors battle for classic video game supremacy!

On February 27, 2010, a new 'King Of Kong' was crowned! And it's not Steve Weibe or Billy Mitchell! New York plastic surgeon Hank Chien has demolished the old record by 11,500 points and has reached video game supremacy with a total of 1,061,700 points!

If you haven't seen 'The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters', I highly recommend the documentary.

Oh My God! Oh My God! Oh My God!

This video, titled 'Married To The Eiffel Tower', covers the strangest/saddest topic ever. It's a documentary about Objectum Sexuality, covering people who fall in love with inanimate objects.

The filmmaker follows three different women.

The first woman profiled is Erika La Tour Eiffel, whose last name was changed after she was married, in a ceremony with an officiant, to the Eiffel Tower. Throughout the film, she confesses her love for the Golden Gate Bridge, an archery bow, random fences and bridges, her wife Mrs. Eiffel Tower, and the Berlin Wall.

The second woman, Amy, is in love with a chuch pipe organ that she named 'Paul', a bannister in her church, and a carnival ride in Germany. The narrator even follows her and films a super awkward scene in which Amy spreads the grease from the carnival ride all over her hands and face and proceeds to make out with the carnival ride.

The third woman is Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer, which translates to Mrs. Wall. Of course her name was changed after she was married to the Berlin Wall. But she didn't get married to the Berlin Wall until after she ended her relationship with a guillotine.

It's amazing how the documentary covers their intimate experiences with these objects. It's a total of 45 minutes long, however, it's gripping and if you can ignore the interviews about the past experiences that caused damage to the lives of these women, then you'll see a very funny documentary.

If you're thinking that you don't want to watch the videos, let me restate this point, IT'S A MOVIE FOLLOWING WOMEN WHO LOVE AND HAVE SEX WITH INANIMATE OBJECTS!!!!!
