Some 2 million people flocked to the Feast Day of the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo, as the Black Nazarene was paraded in major streets and boulevards in Manila yesterday. It has proven once more that this is indeed one of Manila's most popular and most anticipated events. The huge crowds have only one thing in their minds, to touch or behold the beloved Senyor Nazareno during the procession. Those with more acrobatic skills and intrepid spirits have to exert their greatest effort and brave the thousands of fellow devotees in order to climb the carrosa and touch or kiss the Black Christ. Unfortunately, two devotees were killed attempting to do so, and more than four hundred sustained injuries.
This is the start of my Quiapo Black Nazarene Feast Day series for 2010. In this series, I will show you once more the intense faith and frenzy of this fantastic procession in the very heart of Manila. We will also revisit the colorful Quiapo personalities I have featured last year like Master Anos: The Exorcist, Petron Gonzales: The Nazarene Devotee, Madam Delea: A Quiapo Fortune Teller, and Kristong Hari: The Quiapo Mystic.
